Starting from scratch in a new build backyard is actually one of our favorite kinds of jobs. There's no guessing what's under the surface, no patching around old work - just a clean slate and a chance to do it right from day one.
Here's what we put together on this one: fresh garden beds with dark rock mulch, newly planted trees staked and ready to establish, a horizontal cedar fence running the full length of the yard, and irrigation tied into it all. Each piece supports the others. The trees get consistent water without anyone having to think about it. The rock beds keep things tidy and cut down on weeding. The fence ties the whole space together and gives it that clean, modern feel.
The horizontal board fence is worth talking about for a second. It's a style that works really well with newer homes - the clean lines complement modern architecture without trying too hard. We build these to last, with proper post depth and spacing that lets the wood move with the seasons without warping or gapping over time.
What we always tell people with a setup like this is that the hard work is front-loaded. Once the irrigation is dialed in and the plants are established, your weekly effort drops significantly. You're not out there hand-watering young trees or pulling weeds from bare soil. The landscape just does its thing.
Gardens like this fill in and get better every year. The trees will add height and privacy as they mature, the beds will look more lush each season, and the fence will hold its warmth as the cedar ages. It's the kind of outdoor space that pays off over time - and looks great right from the start.
